What this site is for
Ordering soil is easy to get wrong. Too little means a second delivery fee; too much leaves a heap on the driveway. Topsoil Calculators turns your measurements into the units suppliers actually sell in: cubic yards for bulk deliveries, cubic feet or quarts for bags, and an approximate weight in tons for loads sold by weight.
How the calculators work
Every calculator on the site uses the same plain geometry:
- area = length × width (rectangles), 3.14 × radius² (circles), or base × height ÷ 2 (triangles);
- volume = area × depth, with inches divided by 12 to get feet;
- cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27; dry quarts = cubic inches ÷ 67.2; liters = cubic feet × 28.3.
Weights are shown as a range because soil weight depends mostly on moisture. The calculators use the middle of the range for the single tons figure and for any per-ton cost. Bag counts always round up.
Where the figures come from
Conversion factors (27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, 67.2 cubic inches in a US dry quart and so on) are standard units. Weights per cubic yard are typical ranges for loose material as delivered, and every page says “about” because real loads vary. Depth suggestions are common starting points for home gardens, not rules. Your local supplier and extension service know your conditions better than any website.
What this site doesn’t do
We don’t sell soil, recommend particular suppliers or publish prices. Prices are local and change through the year, so the cost guide explains how to compare your own quotes instead.
